The Dichotomy that Exists in Our Society Today

There is a huge dichotomy that exists in our society today.  Medicare benefits begin at age 65 and ‘full retirement age’ for social security is 67.  Of course, this assumes both will even be available in 15 years!  Interestingly, recruiters and hiring managers will often put aside job applications from anyone over 50.  What?

If you are over 50 years old and suddenly find yourself in a position where you are out of work OR you decide you want to make a change, what do you do?  I know women who are miserable in their current role.  But, because they are over 50 they feel as though they have no choice but to stick it out.  I know one woman who says, “Every week that goes by is just another week closer to retirement.”  The problem is she has at least another ten years ahead of her!

What a shame to be miserable for ten years.  Plus, what if something happens and staying in your current role is no longer an option?  None of us can predict the future.  Your company may go through a re-org, or you may go through a significant personal change (my situation).  It is time to change that mindset of just settling, and realize you need to set up your life so you have choices.

If as a woman you have been successful in your career and you have advanced beyond manager level to VP or C-level, you will absolutely be noticed and considered.  And kudos to you!  You likely made many personal sacrifices along the way, so you deserve the recognition.  However, if you are manager level or below, being a woman over 50 in today’s market means you have to really sell your personal brand to be noticed.  You also need to recognize and be prepared to face the idea of stereotypes.  Have confidenceyou can do this – be strong!

Due to the challenges she faced in searching for a new job, in acclimating to a culture that has changed significantly over the last few years, and in having to re-establish credibility despite her success with prior companies, has provided her with a new purpose: provide support, encouragement and guidance to other woman over 50 who feel they do not have a choice. As a fabulous mentor of Andrea's often said: set your life up so you have choices, and always remember - be strong!
