Healthy-ish

Samantha Bee was recently quoted in Bon Appetit magazine as saying, “…I have a pretty healthy relationship with food – one of the best in my life actually. We go way back.” I admit, I have not always had a healthy relationship with food – but I am working on a healthy-ish one. I am a chocoholic (there, I said it); I simply have no self-control when it is in front of me. So much so that my husband has strict orders not to bring boxes of chocolates into the house. He has been known, however, to pay people to bring the chocolate to me, so he doesn’t get into trouble.

When you are going through major life transitions, taking care of yourself is important. However, having some fun to balance the stress is vital. Get together with family and enjoy a meal. Go out with a girlfriend for a drink (or two). It is about balance – as so many things are. Last night, I had my typical winter meal of sautéed spinach and mushrooms, with tofu and a miso & ginger soup. Later this morning I will be making my weekend smoothie comprised of a banana, Kombucha and coconut milk. But as I write this, I am also thinking about the goat cheese and fig flatbread pizza I am going to order when I see my family tomorrow. The last time I had it, I realized that one of the reasons it is so good is that I am pretty sure the flat bread and the pancetta are deep fried. But, there are figs, and goat cheese, and arugula on the pizza. So it is heathy-ish, right?

I used to call myself a foodie, because for years I have subscribed to food magazines and I watch the Food Network and Cooking Channel religiously.  Now, I cannot keep up with the world of food – but that’s OK as I still enjoy watching from the sidelines. I see the culinary world as fashion, art and theater all rolled into one.  It amazing to me that so many people are more conscious about where their food comes from, and they want access to great tasting, whole foods. But, we don’t have to be maniacal about it every day.

Adam Rapoport, editor in chief at Bon Appetit magazine stated in his recent editors letter, “You do what you can. You’re knowledgeable about what you put in your body. You take care of yourself.  But you know that it’s okay if you can’t quite strike that crow yoga pose, or if you sneak a bowl of peanut butter crackle ice cream the night before you wake up to a bowl of sheep’s-milk yogurt.  We all want to be healthy. But isn’t it a lot more fun being healthy-ish?”
