Make Connections, Share Wisdom, Build a Network

The idea of creating a network may feel contrived and a bit overwhelming.  Think of it this way, you are creating a community and making connections with like-minded professionals.  It does take a village when you are looking for work, or looking to make a career change.

I recently joined Ellevate Network.  Ellevate is a global, professional women’s network that offers in-person and online events – plus so much more.  In 1997 it was an unofficial network for women who worked or had worked at Goldman Sachs.  Originally known as “85 Broads” (Goldman Sachs’ old headquarters was located at 85 Broad Street in NYC) the organization was rebranded as Ellevate Network in 2014.  I joined because I wanted to meet professional women with similar values to my own.  Do these values resonate with you?

  • There is power in diversity – we value different perspectives and recognize that they help us grow.  We challenge the norm to make diversity a reality.
  • We work to make the world a better place – we believe that the world can change for the better and we are making it happen.  We don’t wait for others to do it.
  • Community lifts us up – we use the power of teamwork to solve problems.  We communicate openly and work together to elevate each individual.
  • We practice gratitude – we’re passionate about the work we’re doing and recognize that we’re privileged to be doing it.
  • Honesty, integrity & respect, always – when in question, we always default to the “most respectful interpretation” of a situation.
  • Be authentic – we believe in the power of being accountable to our work as well as our personal lives.  We work to make everyone comfortable presenting their genuine selves inside and outside of the workplace.
  • Action is important – we get stuff done, without freaking out!

In the two months since I have been a member, I have had the opportunity to have coffee and share ideas with two successful, intelligent and amazing women in my community.  I also attended a fabulous event, “Know Your Worth at Work.”  This event offered career guidance on how to stand out during job transitions.  Added bonus:  I had the chance to meet more amazing women and share ideas on how to manage transitions.  I look forward to the next event!  Remember, we all need support and encouragement on this journey.  Take a moment to visit Ellevate Network and meet some fabulous women.  Be strong!
