Starting A New Career at 58? You Can!

I cannot believe it has been almost 3 years since I have posted! Let me say that I am thrilled that while I have been away I have heard from you. I received positive comments regarding previous posts as well as requests for me to continue. A lot has happened since we last connected. We have faced a global pandemic which impacted all of us in so many ways. Additionally, I came to the realization that I needed to make a career change at 58 years old. Starting a new career at 58 is not easy, but if I can do it you can do it!

This week I can across a posting by Samia Hasan on IG which was an eye opener for me. She indicated that if you answer yes to any of these questions (below) it is time for a change. About 6 months ago I had essentially answered yes to every question. I updated my resume and LinkedIn page, starting applying to positions and engaged with recruiters when contacted.

During this time I went through screenings and even level two interviews with a number of companies. In some cases they weren’t interested in continuing, or the salary wasn’t in line. There were even red flags during the process relative to company culture, which had me withdraw my application a couple of times. I had made an important decision: I wasn’t going to leave just to leave. I was going to step into a role and company which was a better fit for me.

If you answer yes to even a portion of the questions below, it is time for a career change:

  1. You’re unable to add value like you used to
  2. Complacency has kicked in (now known as ‘quiet quitting’)
  3. You dread going to work (you live for the weekend)
  4. Your body is telling you, enough is enough
  5. Misalignment on core values (turns out your core values have no alignment to what your company professes as theirs)
  6. Your career has stagnated
  7. You’re only there for the money

Choose “courage over comfort.” We have all chosen (at times) to stay miserable because at least we know what to expect. But we can instead choose to be courageous and take a chance. It will be a bit uncomfortable. But it goes back to another favorite phrase: set your life up so you have choices. Check out Samia Hasan and her guide to help you through the decision making and transition. Stay fabulous and always be strong!
